Government e-Marketplace (GeM) Surpasses ₹5 Lakh Crore Milestone in Record Time
In a remarkable achievement, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has crossed ₹5 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), setting a new record just 18 days before the close of the financial year 2024-25. This rapid growth underscores GeM’s rising importance as India’s go-to platform for public procurement, with over 1.6 lakh government buyers actively using the portal.
What makes this milestone even more impressive is that GeM leaped from ₹4 lakh crore to ₹5 lakh crore in less than 50 days since hitting the previous mark on January 23, 2025. This pace highlights the increasing trust and participation of sellers and buyers in the digital procurement ecosystem.
Boosting Opportunities for Small Businesses
GeM has been rolling out significant policy reforms to make it easier for businesses to participate in government procurement. Measures like reducing transaction charges, vendor assessment fees, and caution money requirements have made the platform more accessible, especially for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), startups, and women-led businesses. As of February 13, 2025, over 22 lakh sellers and service providers are registered on GeM, making procurement more competitive and inclusive.
This year also marks the sixth anniversary of SWAYATT (Startups, Women, and Youth Advantage Through e-Transactions), a program designed to empower underrepresented seller groups. So far, more than 29,000 startups and 1.8 lakh Udyam-verified women-led enterprises have joined GeM, driving greater economic participation.
Tech-Driven Growth
GeM is not just about policy reforms—it is also harnessing technology to improve efficiency. One of the biggest milestones this year was its large-scale cloud migration, ensuring better scalability, security, and speed for users. Moreover, the introduction of GeM AI, an AI-powered search tool, is helping users make faster and smarter procurement decisions by analyzing data in real time.
Driving Transparency and Savings
With its focus on transparency and efficiency, GeM has enabled public savings of over ₹1.15 lakh crore. The platform connects central and state ministries, government departments, public sector enterprises, panchayats, and cooperatives, making digital procurement more widespread and effective.
As GeM continues to grow, it is reinforcing India’s digital economy by making government procurement more transparent, inclusive, and technology-driven. With a strong commitment to innovation, GeM is paving the way for a more efficient and fair procurement system that benefits businesses and the country alike.
