Indian Railways Achieves Historic Milestones in Passenger Services, Safety, and Global Recognition

Indian Railways is making great strides in both passenger services and freight transportation while keeping travel costs affordable. Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared some major achievements and future plans, highlighting how the railway sector is growing and becoming a global leader.

Affordable Travel with Government Support

Currently, the cost of travel per kilometer by train is ₹1.38, but passengers are charged only 73 paise, meaning a 47% subsidy is provided. In the last financial year, the government supported passengers with a subsidy of around ₹60,000 crore. This ensures that train travel remains economical, especially compared to Western nations where fares are 10 to 20 times higher.

India Becomes a Global Leader in Locomotive Production

A major achievement this year is the production of 1,400 locomotives, surpassing the combined output of America and Europe. Additionally, Indian Railways has added 2 lakh new wagons, strengthening cargo transportation. By March 31, India will be among the top three countries in the world for freight transport, handling 1.6 billion tons of cargo alongside China and the USA.

Focus on Safety and Modernization

Safety remains a top priority. Indian Railways is replacing older ICF coaches with modern LHB coaches, known for their higher safety standards. Over 41,000 LHB coaches have already been introduced. Other safety measures include long rails, electronic interlocking systems, fog safety devices, and the Kavach system, which prevents train collisions.

Following a recent accident at New Delhi Railway Station, a high-level investigation is underway, and CCTV footage is being analyzed. The government has assured that steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

Green Railways and Global Exports

Indian Railways aims to achieve ‘Scope 1 Net Zero’ emissions by 2025 and ‘Scope 2 Net Zero’ by 2030. Railway electrification has helped control energy costs despite increasing passenger and freight transport. Moreover, India is now exporting railway coaches and locomotives to countries like Mozambique, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and even propulsion parts to European nations.

Bright Future for Indian Railways

With a revenue of ₹2.78 lakh crore, Indian Railways is successfully covering its expenses, thanks to improved efficiency and increased ridership. The government is committed to making rail travel safer, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly. With continued investments and modernization, Indian Railways is well on its way to becoming a world-class transportation system.
